In form Burscough hit Hesketh’s winning run

- BY THOMAS WAREING

MI DENTAL L&D.C.C FIRST DIVISION, BURSCOUGH 131-4 (20PTS) BEAT FLEETWOOD HESKETH CC 128 ALL OUT (3PTS) BY 6 WICKETS.

TRAINING strategies sponsored Fleetwood Hesketh saw their winning run come to an end last weekend, when they were well beaten by Burscough at School Lane.

Play started on time, much to the surprise of both sets of players given the downpour that had happened just a couple of hours before the game. Burscough captain Brendan Domigan won a crucial toss, and chose to bowl in what looked to be very seamer friendly conditions.

And that proved to be the case, as Fleetwood slumped to 20 for 4 in no time at all. Neil Rimmer, Huw Summerfield, Marasinghe Perera and Andrew Watts all fell for single figures as Jon Stone and Rob Glaysher made the most of their opportunity with the new ball.

There was something of a fightback as Lee Bolton (19) and Lee Rimmer (16) offered some resistance in the middle order. Derek Sykes and Tommy Wareing helped edge the score closer to the 100 mark, before Sykes was undone by superb yorker from Navdeep Aujla for a gritty 27.

Some excellent ball striking from Stephen Gregory (26) gave the visitors something to bowl at, before they were finally all out for 128. All of Burscough’s bowlers contributed to the wickets column, with Aujla claiming 4-36.

For the second week in succession Hesketh were left with a modest total to defend and a good start was needed. The hero from the previous week Aaron Halsall thought he’d provided the ideal start, but he was denied what looked to be certain LBW off the very first ball of the innings.

That appeal aside, Fleetwood struggled to find much penetration with the new ball, so it was Daniel Murphy who gave them a glimmer of hope with 3 wickets in fairly quick time. However the partnership between Aujla and Jon Stone took the game away from Fleetwood, who toiled somewhat towards the end. Stone completed an excellent half century, as Burscough cruised home by 6 wickets. Murphy continued his excellent start to the season, finishing with 4-20.

The two sides meet again this Friday, as they go head to head in the Liverpool Echo Knockout at School lane.
