Sykes has no complaints after defeat to pace setters

FLEETWOOD Hesketh had a tough encounter with Burscough on Saturday.

Derek Sykes and his team weren’t able to capitalise on a strong start to the season after Burscough, who have been doing well themselves, won by six wickets.

Sykes admitted losing the toss and having to bat first put them on the back foot from the start and despite being able to push their way back into the game, it was always going to be tough to get the win.

“They’re top of the league I think so it was a hard match. We lost the toss and had to bat first as they chose to field.

“The conditions weren’t great so losing the toss and conceding early wickets wasn’t really the best start.

“We fought our way back though and we thought we had a decent score in the end.

They had a strong partnership in bat and that took the game away from us.

“Decisions didn’t really go our way and we dropped a few catches. It was a decent game but on the day they were the better side.

“We had some good performances – Daniel Murphy bowled very well and took all of our wickets – but we didn’t have enough to win the game.”

Sykes and his team have to face Burscough again this weekend in the Liverpool Echo KO cup match on Friday and the captain hopes his side can produce a better result.

“It is 20-20 cricket so it’s slightly different but obviously we know how strong a side Burscough are and we’ll have a few players missing.

“Hopefully we’ll get a result this time and make it through to the next round but obviously our focus still fully remains on the league.

“We’ll just be looking to give a good account of ourselves and play some good cricket and take a performance over to Saturday.”

Fleetwood Hesketh face Ainsdale in the league on Saturday and it’s a game Sykes expects his side to win.

“Aisndale won their first game of the season last weekend so they’ll come into the game with confidence.

“We’re at home though and we’ll be hoping to produce another strong performance to win. The league is our priority and we’re fighting for promotion so it’s important to get a result.”
