Which supermarket do you use most?
WHICH supermarket do you most like to shop at?
Last week the Government gave its go-ahead to plans for a huge new Sainsbury’s supermarket at Meols Cop retail park in Southport, which gives the firm a major boost in the fight for a share of the market locally – a fight in Southport, Formby and Ormskirk, which is being dominated by Tesco.
As well as large superstores in Southport and in Formby, Tesco has opened a number of smaller convenience stores around the region in recent years – as well as acquiring the One Stop chain of shops.
Tesco recently sold its ownership of Dobbies garden centre.
Shoppers locally spend far more money each year (£58.03m) at the Tesco store on Town Lane in Kew than anywhere else in the region, with Tesco in Formby taking fourth spot, and Sainsbury’s in Lord Street in Southport down at number seven.
Sainsbury’s new store, at 60,000sq ft, would be similar in size to Tesco in Kew – situated just a few hundred yards away.
Expect lots more choice for shoppers – but we could also be the beneficiaries of a supermarket war, with food and petrol prices likely to fall in what is going to become a very competitive local market.
As well as Sainsbury’s, Aldi is also keen to build a new supermarket on the site of Birkdale Trading Estate in Southport.
In backing plans for the new Sainsbury’s, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Sajid Javid said the new Sainsbury’s would not have a great impact on shops in the town centre – but would have a bigger impact on rival supermarkets.
Documents submitted to the planning inquiry in the case revealed the turnover, in millions of pounds, for supermarkets in Southport, Formby and Ormskirk.
