Goose chased by New Vics

- BY DAVE ADDISON

THE two New Victoria teams had contrasting fortunes in their respective divisions of the Southport and District Amateur Cricket League last Saturday.

In the Premier Division the first XI got off to a resounding 172 run win over Goose Green (Wigan).

The visitors won the toss and put the home team into bat in bright and breezy conditions. Skipper Matty Howard (32 including 6 4s) got the score going with a couple of smartly driven boundaries and was aided by Jack Sawbridge (15 including 2 4s) with some athletic running between the wickets. The New Vic batting then slumped as Atkinson took three wickets for the visitors with ducks by Harry Sawbridge and Barry Mills.

This introduced Jonny Howard (112 including 12 4’s and 7 6’s) and he really dominated the depleted Goose Green team.

When he was out additional runs were made by young Australian Dean Jones (16 including 2 6s) and a late cameo by Joe Sawbridge (25 including 5 4’s) for the New Vic innings to close on 222 for 8 in the full 45 overs.

After tea the visitors were immediately knocked back by the bowling of Kieran Rigby (4 overs, 3 maidens,5 runs, 1 wicket) and Barry Mills (4 overs,0 maidens, 9 runs, 3 wickets) before Dean Jones (4 overs, 2 maidens,11 runs, 3 wickets) for the visitors to finish on 50 for 8 (all out).

New Vic took all 20 winning points.

It was a totally different story for the second Xl in Division Two against Whitefield down in Huyton. Whitefield won the toss and asked New Vic to bat.

Unfortunately the New Vic innings never really got going.

Three early wickets were lost before Neville Walker (45 including 9 4s) made an impact.

Unfortunately he had no support and the last five wickets fell for 11 runs. The New Vic total of 102 all out proved to be inadequate as Whitefield cruised to victory for the loss of only one wicket.
