Records smashed as Trinity and McCrae post staggering totals

-

RECORDS tumbled at The Rookery on Saturday as Trinity’s new Aussie acquisition Hayden McCrae set a new club record with an incredible unbeaten 203 in a total of 318 for 1, also a new club record.

Skipper Geoff Thornton won the toss and chose to bat on an excellent track, and openers Tony Campbell and Hayden McCrae quickly set about making the most of the favourable conditions, racing to a century opening stand inside 16 overs.

McCrae destroyed the Maghull attack, smashing 34 boundaries and 2 sixes as he amassed a fantastic double century to mark his Trinity debut in style.

The opening pair added 187 for the first wicket before Campbell was caught at mid on for 59.

The returning Wim van der Walt continued the carnage with an unbeaten 46 as he added a further 131 for the second wicket with McCrae before the declaration came in the 49th over with the score 318 for 1.

In reply, Maghull made a disastrous start, Walters run out without facing in the very first over.

Crilly (50) and Dunne (35) looked comfortable before getting themselves out as the batsmen made the most of the quick outfield.

Runs continued to flow and wickets continued to fall and at 176 for 9, Trinity were on the brink of victory.

But Gillespie (76no) batted sensibly with the tail, taking nearly all of the strike as the Rookery men tried everything to get the final elusive wicket.

However, the last pair stood firm and the visitors hung on for the draw after facing 60 overs.

Meanwhile the seconds lost by 64 runs at Colwyn Bay, Joey Damen (40) and Andy Slater (27) top scored as Trinity’s total of 140 fell short.

The third team won a thriller at home to Formby on Sunday, chasing down 96 with just one wicket to spare.
