We expected to win - and we did says Wareing

FLEETWOOD Hesketh CC recorded a very good victory against bottom of the league side Hightown St Marys on Saturday.

Tommy Wareing and his side have struggled to get wins on the board in a tough league and it was their first victory in five matches.

Hesketh went into the fixture as resounding favourites given that Hightown have failed to win a league match this season.

However, Wareing insisted his players remained focused despite the pressure and they delivered a strong performance to record a comfortable victory.

“It was a good win. It was a win we needed and one we expected really,” said Wareing.

“I give no disrespect to Hightown but obviously they haven’t won a game this season so it was a must win match for us.

“We went there and performed well on the day and it was important for us to get those points after a run of poor form without many wins.

“The pressure was on the bowlers as it was a day we expected them to be on top. All four seam bowlers were though and that was great.

“The two spin bowlers, me included, weren’t needed at all so that was also good and showed we were in control.

“To bowl them out for just over 100 was useful and it was a positive display which we can take forward with us.”

It was a straight-forward victory but Hesketh still needed a few key players to step up and perform and Wareing was delighted to see bowler Owen Drummond come to the forefront.

The skipper praised Drummond’s accuracy with the ball in hand and was also pleased with a strong batting score from talented opener Huw Summerfield.

“Owen Drummond bowled really well and it’s probably the best he has bowled this season,” said Wareing.

“His accuracy was much improved compared to recent performances where he has had a tendency to be a little erratic.

“Huw Summerfield got 45 not out with the bat which was really good to see when you’re chasing a low score on a difficult wicket.

“I’m hoping for more from him really. He’s far too good for him to not be getting runs more consistently so hopefully he can continue to do so.”

Hesketh are back in action this Saturday when they take on league leaders Highfield in what promises to be an extremely difficult fixture for Wareing and his team.

Highfield go into the clash on the back of a defeat but they have a comfortable lead at the top of the table and Wareing expects them to be very tough opponents.

He hopes his side can produce another strong display and give themselves the best chance possible of causing an upset.

“They are high fliers in the league. They will be strong at home. It’s a bit of a free hit for us as they’re not a team around us and not a team we’re expected to beat,” said Wareing.

“We’re hoping to play positively again and just see how we can perform on the day. It’s one of those leagues where you never quite know how you’ll perform or get on.

“I’m expecting a tough game as they have been top for most of the season. We’re looking forward to it though and like I say, anything can happen.

“We’ll have just the one change to be made. It will be pretty much the same team from last week but I’ve not yet made a decision on the change yet so we’ll see.”
