Womens and doubles win sees Mawdesley bring down Ormskirk

- BY DAVID GRICE

WINS in both of the women’s doubles contests was the key in a 5-3 win for Mawdesley’s fourth team over Ormskirk III. That result moves Mawedesley back as leaders of the fourth division in week six of the ‘Master Lock & Safe’ Southport and District Badminton League.

With both sides level at 2-2 after the mixed doubles, a strong straight-sets win for Mawdesley’s men doubles first pair Nick Hilton and Luke Eckersley set the ball rolling for an impressive end to the nights proceedings.

The win was achieved following a 21-11, 21-11 win for first women’s doubles pair Diane Jennings and Fern Everton as well as a come from behind win for second pair Marie Glynn and team captain Nicky Mitchell 19-21, 21-12, 21-14.

That loss for Ormskirk saw Tarleton II capitalise and overtake them into second spot after a comprehensive 8-0 white-washing against bottom side West End Park III.

In other fourth division contests, Woodvale V and Crosby secured vital wins in a bid to keep their promotion chances alive against bottom half sides Southport V and Southsands III.

While Churchtown IV may have lost their 100% winning record, a winning draw still pleased the fifth division leaders against Tarleton IV in a battle of the top two.

Over half of the matches went to a deciding set, and nothing could separate them in the end until sets difference broke the tie.

Just behind them are Woodvale VI.

Their perfect 8-0 performance over Southport VI keeps them within touching distance of the top two.

Sadly for Hesketh Bank II, they missed on the opportunity to temporarily take the second promotion spot, after they were ousted 5-3 by midtable side St. Cuthberts III.

In the league’s top division, both Churchtown and Mawdesley lost their perfect start to the season.

Despite neither side claiming another three points, a winning draw was enough against Victoria Hall and Woodvale II respectively.

Making the most of those results were Woodvale, who did not even drop a set in their 8-0 win over strugglers Burscough Pioneers to close the gap at the top to five points.

Despite a strong start in the mixed doubles, Southport edged over the line in their 5-3 upset victory over West End Park.

That win moves them three points clear from the relegation zone.

As for bottom side Southport II, they produced their best performance despite the 6-2 defeat to Churchtown II which included a number of narrow three-set losses.

Tarleton continue to surprise everyone with one of their best seasons in recent times. Their 5-3 win over Woodvale III puts them into second place in the second division.

Two points ahead are leaders Southsands who saw off Formby 7-1 in impressive fashion.

Elsewhere, Mawdesley II keep up the pace with the rest of the promotion contenders after a strong and solid 6-2 victory against West End Park II.

Ormskirk made a sure-fire statement of winning division three after a near dominant 7-1 result over second place side Hesketh Bank.

With Ormskirk’s second team aiming to join their first team counterparts, they avoided a possible shock result in their 5-3 win over a South- sands II side who look to be heavily involved in the battle to avoid relegation.

With this division conjuring up the most draws so far this season, two more were added to the slate. Burscough Pioneers II just about showed their superiority from the rest of the chasing pack after a claiming a winning draw over mid-table side St. Cuthberts. Meanwhile, Woodvale grabbed a valuable two points in their winning draw result over Churchtown.

With both sides tied on match wins and sets, the contest was decided on points won and Woodvale were announced the victors by a slender four points.

It’s all about the sixes for Woodvale VI. A 7-1 win over West End Park IV makes it six wins out of six to remain leaders of the sixth division. Second place side Ormskirk IV matched their promotion rivals scoreline after their comfortable winning display over Crosby II.

Sadly for Churchtown V, they fell further behind after being falling to fellow top half side Southsands IV 5-3. As for Woodvale VIII, they further cemented their place in midtable after collecting a comfortable 6-2 win at Southport VIII.

In the league’s bottom division, St. Cuthberts IV brushed aside Formby’s third team 6-2 to be level on points with coleaders Burscough Pioneers IV.

Next week sees the first round of the prestigious Watkinson Trophy begin. The league’s version of the F.A Cup will see every team in the league do battle in the league’s most historic handicapped team tournament.
