Councillors vote to oppose fracking plans
SEFTON Council has voted to oppose any fracking developments on its land.
Councillors from all parties voted in favour of a motion put forward by Cllr Maria Bennett, which called for opposition to the controversial practice and supports the use of renewable energy.
Cllr Bennett, leader of the group of independents, implored her fellow councillors to support the action, arguing that fracking was dangerous for the environment, for residents, and for wildlife.
Fracking, which involves drilling for shale gas, has proved hugely unpopular and protesters say it should be considered unsafe.
The full council meeting, held at Bootle Town Hall, was attended by members of anti-fracking campaign groups from Southport and Formby, presenting a 3,000-name petition.
Councillors also gave impassioned speeches on the need for a greater use of sustainable and renewable energy.
Cllr Iain Brodie Browne argued that the reduced cost of solar and other renewable energy meant that better alternatives were out there, while repeated warnings were raised over the safety of fracking and, in particular, the toxic chemicals involved.
The leaders of the Labour, Liberal Democrat and Conservative groups all voted in support of the motion.
In total, 37 voted in favour and two abstained, while the council’s planning committee members did not take part to avoid a conflict of interest.
As a result, the council has officially committed to not allow any fracking activities on councilowned or controlled land, It will also “support” renewable energy and act to protect community interests against the impacts of fracking in the borough.
But there remains the risk that national government policy could potentially overrule the council’s stance.
Earlier in January, an application to explore a site in Altcar Moss, bordering Sefton, was submitted to Lancashire County Council.
