KING George V College invited Southport MP Damien Moore to visit and tour the newly improved facilities as part of the recent Colleges Week.

It gave students an opportunity to discuss their experience at KGV and their aspirations for the future, as well as their concerns about equal funding for colleges.

Student Isabella Salzano said: “It was a great opportunity to meet an MP; something I didn’t think I would be able to do in my education.

“I plan to study international history and politics at university and so it was a fantastic experience to discuss such an important issue as equal funding for colleges with an MP.”

The college said: “Central to the week has been the ‘Love Our Colleges’ campaign; an opportunity to highlight the brilliant work that goes on in colleges and the dedicated staff who make it all possible.

“Colleges transform lives by helping people make the most of their talents and realise their ambitions.

“The 266 colleges across England are an essential part of the education system; with over 2.2 million students enrolled on full and part time courses.

“However over the last decade, colleges have had to deal with an average 30% funding cut, whilst costs have increased dramatically.

“This situation is not sustainable and ultimately impacts upon students, businesses, communities and the wider economy.

“Increased funding will give all students a fair chance, give college staff fair pay and provide the high-quality skills the country needs.

“That is why unions, students and colleges are coming together, to call on government for better investment in colleges, and fair pay for college staff.”

College principal AnneMarie Francis, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Damien Moore to King George V to meet students and see the investments we are making in their education.

“High quality post-16 education is central to the development of our future workforce and it is reassuring to have his support.

“Our students constantly inspire me in their vision to go onto great things, and Colleges Week has brought a focus on ensuring that all young people can access such opportunities through fair funding.”

Mr Moore toured the college with students and staff and then took time to chat to students about their choice to come to KGV, their subjects and their ambitions.

He was very clear that the voice of sixth form and further education colleges must be heard on the matter of funding.

Mr Moore said: “KGV has a long history of teaching our town’s children and sending them to some of the best universities in our country.

“I loved speaking to the students about everything they want to do with their future.”
