Man suffers ‘major trauma’ in crash

A DRIVER suffered major injuries after crashing into a lamp-post in Birkdale.

The man, aged around 20, had to be cut free by fire-fighters after smashing his car on Westborune Road.

Officers cut the roof of the Toyota Aygo to free the man, who was then rushed to hospital with injuries to his back, arm and abdomen.

North West Ambulance Service described the injuries as “major trauma”.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision, which happened shortly before 9am on Tuesday morning.

A spokesman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: “Fire crews attended a road traffic collision involving three vehicles today, Tuesday 4th December, on Westbourne Road, Southport.

“Crews were alerted at 8.58am and were on scene at 9.05am. Two fire engines attended, as well as the search and rescue team.

“On arrival, crews found all vehicles to be on all four wheels.

“Firefighte­rs used hydraulic cutting equipment to remove the roof of one of the vehicles to extricate one person.

“They were handed into the care of North West Ambulance Service and taken to hospital for further treatment.”
