Yobs wreck public toilets
VANDALS caused a wave of destruction at public toilets, smashing a sink and trying to start a fire.
West Lancashire Borough Council had to close the toilets, on Church Road in Tarleton, after the latest attack caused significant damage.
The incident comes as vandalism and anti-social behaviour have become more common in Tarleton and in particular around St Mark’s Square.
Residents have increasingly complained of groups of young people congregating and causing damage and intimidation in the village.
The latest incident took place overnight on Monday, December 3 when the door of the disabled toilet was kicked in and the lock damaged.
The women’s facility was shut when youths tried to set fire to it and the men’s had remained open after the washbasin was smashed in, only for further damage to be caused last weekend and cause the final closure.
The council now says it is working to ensure the toilets are reopened as soon as possible.
It has also reported the vandalism to the police and CCTV footage from the council’s cameras has been provided to help aid the investigation.
A council spokesman said: “The council understands this is not an isolated matter.
“There is an ongoing police investigation regarding criminal damage to the toilets and other anti-social behaviour in the area.”
Cllr Ian Moran, leader of West Lancashire Borough Council, said: “The council understands the importance of this facility to local people but has been forced to close it due to this spate of vandalism.
“We are working with police to help try and catch the people responsible and we hope to re-open the toilets very soon.”
Anyone with information about the damage is asked to contact Lancashire police on 101.
