CHRISTMAS came early in Southport on Sunday as hundreds of runners dressed as Santa Claus descended on the town.

Volunteers braved the cold weather to take part in the annual Santa Sprint and raise money for Queenscourt Hospice.

The event is now in its ninth year and featured both a 3k and a 5k course.

The Santa Sprint is sponsored by the Silcock Leisure Group and saw adults and children set off from the carousel on Southport pier before running and walking around the seafront.

Rachael West, volunteer and citizenship worker with Volunteer Centre Sefton – which is part of Sefton CVS – said: “Queenscourt Hospice provides an invaluable service to Southport and West Lancashire residents with serious illnesses by enabling them to achieve the best possible quality of life.

“The Santa Sprint is a great way to raise money for this really worthwhile local cause.”
