SOUTHPORT were knocked out of the FA Cup by Tranmere Rovers on Monday night with Liam Watson admitting his side lacked guile.

League Two Rovers - 59 places above the Sandgrounders in the football pyramid - booked a third round clash at home to Tottenham as two volleys from Connor Jennings avoided an upset at a sold out Haig Avenue.

Following the 1-1 draw at Prenton Park in their initial meeting, Jennings put Rovers ahead with a fine dipping effort early on before adding another just before half-time.

“I thought we showed too much respect the first 20-25 minutes and then showed a bit of naivety in the last five minutes of the second-half where we got caught up the field and ended up conceding a goal,” Watson said afterwards.
