Marianne’s tales of theatreland
FORMER actress Marianne Welsh was the guest speaker at the Christmas afternoon tea for members of Southport Friendship Group.
She entertained everyone present with anecdotes about her time staying with theatre landladies.
During her varied career as an actress and singer, Marianne was also in three number one tours of major musicals: Hair, performing opposite Paul Nicholas, Elvis the musical alongside Shakin Stevens and Buddy, the Buddy Holly musical with Billy Geraghty, and had to find accommodation wherever the tours went.
The audience enjoyed hearing her tales including when she was in digs with actor
Matthew Kelly and they shared a bathroom that looked as if it had been in the TV show Rising Damp.
She spoke fondly of many of the landladies, some being like second mums to her and she is still in touch with two, though they have retired.
After her talk Marianne delighted the members by singing the Barbra Streisand song The Way We Were and received much applause.
