Mar­i­anne’s tales of the­atre­land

FOR­MER ac­tress Mar­i­anne Welsh was the guest speaker at the Christ­mas af­ter­noon tea for mem­bers of South­port Friend­ship Group.

She en­ter­tained ev­ery­one present with anec­dotes about her time stay­ing with the­atre land­ladies.

Dur­ing her var­ied ca­reer as an ac­tress and singer, Mar­i­anne was also in three num­ber one tours of ma­jor mu­si­cals: Hair, per­form­ing op­po­site Paul Ni­cholas, Elvis the mu­si­cal along­side Shakin Stevens and Buddy, the Buddy Holly mu­si­cal with Billy Ger­aghty, and had to find ac­com­mo­da­tion wher­ever the tours went.

The au­di­ence en­joyed hear­ing her tales in­clud­ing when she was in digs with ac­tor

Matthew Kelly and they shared a bath­room that looked as if it had been in the TV show Ris­ing Damp.

She spoke fondly of many of the land­ladies, some be­ing like sec­ond mums to her and she is still in touch with two, though they have re­tired.

Af­ter her talk Mar­i­anne de­lighted the mem­bers by singing the Bar­bra Streisand song The Way We Were and re­ceived much ap­plause.
