AXED Skelmersdale United boss Dave Powell has made an immediate return to football with HSL Premier Division outfit West Didsbury & Chorlton.

Powell departed the EvoStik West outfit in November but was handed an immediate way back into the game by struggling Chorlton.

The Manchester-based outfit are three points adrift of safety in the Premier Division but won 4-0 in Powell’s first game in charge thanks to Joe Shaw, a Daniel McLaughlin double and captain Matt Eckersley.

Following his appointment, former Burscough and Prescot Cables supremo Powell said: “I am delighted to be returning to the NWCFL with West Didsbury & Chorlton after spending the last eight years managing and coaching in the Evo-Stik.

“West have largely been progressing very nicely over that time and I feel sure that despite the current setback I can help get the club back on track.

“We have a big job on this season but along with my supporting back-up team headed by assistant manager Stuart Humphreys, we will be giving it our all.”

Skelmersdale’s new boss, Paul McNally, is yet to land his first win at the club following Saturday’s 6-0 humbling at Leek Town. The club lost influential captain Phil Mooney to Evo-Stik West outfit Widnes at the beginning of December and continue to play their home matches outside of Skelmersdale due to a disagreement with the owner of their traditional Uretek Stadium home.

United are currently three points adrift of safety and winless since Powell’s final victory at the club in September. Since that win over Radcliffe, Skem have lost 11 of their next 13 matches.

McNally will be hoping to kick-start his reign with a result at high-flying Runcorn Linnets this weekend.

Linnets were promoted from the HSL Premier Division last term but have made a flying start to the season.
