Medics feel peaky for charitble trek
ATEAM of doctors and healthcare professionals are doing the Three Peaks Challenge in support of Queenscourt Hospice.
The hospice is a local charity supporting people with serious illnesses in Southport, Formby, and West Lancashire.
This year it is the chosen charity of Renacres Hospital, near Ormskirk, with staff planning to conquer the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales to raise £1,600.
Alex Birch, 32, a charge nurse in the outpatient department at Renacres Hospital said: “Queenscourt Hospice is a fantastic service for the community.
“It doesn’t just offer paliative services, but different services that are reliant on charity work.”
“We thought it would be a good thing to do.”
Alex Birch, Dr Jim Hammond, orthopaedic surgeon Matt CartwrightTerry, Dr Adrian Head-Rapson and operating department practitioners Helen Price and John Mellor are to take on the challenge May 18.
The Three Peaks challenge involves ascending Ben Nevis, Sca Fell Pike & Mount Snowdon in the space of 24 hours.
The total walking distance is estimated to be about 23 miles.
Alex said: “It’s a lot of walking to do and it’s not too hard, it’s more mind over matter.”
Renacres Hospital will be supporting the team by providing transport to the locations and sponsoring the challenge.
Alex Birch said: “It’s incredibly important that people support Queenscourt Hospice.
“Nobody is a mind reader, they never know when they’re going to need Queenscourt Hospice and other hospice services across the country. It’s just a really fantastic cause and charity.”
