AWOMAN in her twenties died after being hit by a train in Birkdale.

The woman, who has not been named by police, was struck on the level crossing at Crescent Road, between Birkdale and Hillside stations.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 2pm on Tuesday and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

British Transport Police (BTP) said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.

The incident led to delays and cancellations on Merseyrail, with trains travelling between Southport and Formby suspended and later replaced by bus services.

The rail operator said that services returned to normal about an hour and a half later.

A BTP spokesman said: “Officers were called to the lines in Birkdale at 2.04pm following reports a person had been struck by a train. Paramedics also attended but sadly a woman in her twenties was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

About two years ago, a driver escaped without serious injury after his car was hit by a train at the same crossing.

And in September last year, a train driver had to make an emergency stop when three men appeared on the track in the same location.

The men were narrowly missed by the train after appearing from behind a passing train going in the opposite direction on the other track.
