AERIAL photos of construction work for Southport’s new lifeboat station have been revealed.

Southport Offshore Rescue Trust is building its new headquarters off Marine Drive, after the completion of two decades of fundraising and planning.

The purpose-built station will be a significant upgrade on the existing facility, near Pleasureland, and will provide the crew with more modern facilities,.

The new station will also allow all lifeboats to be stored in one place and will permit the crews to be stationed closer to the shoreline. Funds for the new building, along with planning permission, were secured in 2015, but the trust which runs the lifeboat charity has had to undergo a rigorous process to meet the conditions necessary for Sefton Council and Natural England to sign off the land transfer.

Sharing the photos on Facebook, a spokesman for the trust said: “From the images, you can see just how big the building will be.

“In fact, it will be more than three times the size of our existing lifeboat house and we believe it will be the biggest in the North West.

“In the coming weeks, the concrete slab for the floor will be poured before the cladding is attached to the side of the building.”

He thanked donors, saying: “This lifeboat station is being paid for entirely by public donations, and we could not do it without your support.”
