So simple - just score GOALS
LIAM Watson says Southport must start scoring goals after three consecutive defeats without finding the back of the net.
The Sandgrounders did not concede in their first four games of the National League North campaign but suffered back-to-back setbacks during the Bank Holiday weekend.
Southport were beaten 1-0 at home by Watson’s former side AFC Telford before losing 2-0 at Alfreton Town on Monday.
The manager blamed individual errors for the loss before adding: “I’ve also got to put my hands up
and say I’ve got the team wrong but there are reasons.
“Dean [Winnard] was injured, that takes one, Russell [Benjamin] played but had a calf injury but wanted to get through it.
“Jack [Sampson] had a little bit of a knock but had a go so I tried to get as many fit players on the pitch as I could.
“It didn’t work.
People wait for their opportunities and need to grasp them when they get them. When they don’t you then start questioning if they’re good enough.
“It’s alright doing it in pre-season but you have to do it in the season when it matters but then again you have to find that out and you find that out by playing them.” Kettering travel to Haig Avenue this weekend also looking to bounce back from three consecutive losses.
The visitors have won just one game during the new term and Watson knows where Southport must improve.
“Seven games in, we’ve only scored in two games and that tells you where the problem lies,” he added.
“Out of seven games we’ve had five really good performances and we’ve had two shockers.
“We’ve got to eradicate the two shockers quickly and start finding the net.
“Goals change games and the forwards aren’t scoring, the wingers aren’t scoring, the midfielders aren’t chipping in and the defenders aren’t chipping in.
“As a team we need to start scoring goals.”
