I’m so lucky to be alive after smash

AYOUNG man has told about his “lucky” escape after his car overturned as he said he tried to avoid two cars driving towards him.

Liam Mackie, 20, was driving his friend, Matthew Coughlan, 20, home at about 1am along Coastal Road, in Southport, when two cars came hurtling at him, he said.

He believes that one car was trying to overtake the other.

A dramatic picture of Liam’s car showed it upturned on grassy land, caused when he desperately tried to swerve away from the oncoming vehicles to avoid a crash.

Liam, from Ainsdale, said he came out of the car with blood pouring from his head, but fortunately neither him or Matthew were seriously injured.

Merseyside Police has been approached by The Visiter for more information. Liam said he was driving at the speed limit before seeing the two cars on Sunday morning. He said he tried his best to keep control of his car while trying to avoid the oncoming vehicles, until he hit a bollard.

He said: “It was like we swerved into everything in our path. My head was pouring with blood and my blood was on the windscreen.”

The two cars travelling towards Liam did not stop, he claimed.

The pair, who had both been wearing their seatbelts, called an ambulance and police.

He said he had to wear a neck brace for five hours, but both he and Matthew only had minor injuries.

But Liam, who only bought the car three weeks ago, said he was “gutted” about the damage caused because he uses his car “for everything”.

He said: “I’ve got to drive.

“I use it for everything, I use it all the time.”

Liam’s auntie, Tracey Brockett Mackie, said: “They’re absolutely so lucky.

“They could have died.” She added: “I’m so gutted for him, he’s such a good lad, he needs a car for work and the fact that two cars left him in that ditch is really quite shocking!

“They obviously seen he have to swerve to get out of their way, and they’ve just drove off leaving the scene not knowing if they were even alive.”

The family are appealing for anyone who may have seen the crash to get in touch with information that could help an investigation.
