What’s On At The Bijou Cinema We’ve got a classic end to the month

THE Southport Bijou Cinema at 8 Post Office rounds off its February programme of films this week with a varied mix: Dora And The Lost City Of Gold (PG), Cast Away (12A), Frozen (PG), Brazil (15), West Side Story (PG), Sunset Blvd. (PG), Life Is Beautiful (PG), Now Voyager (U), The Odd Couple (PG), Moulin Rouge! (12A), Rebel Without A Cause (PG) And Crowhurst (12A).

Today (Thursday) at 2.30pm is Dora And The Lost City Of Gold (PG), which sees childhood character Dora the Explorer lead her friends on an adventure to save her parents and solve the mystery behind a lost city of gold.

Later at 7.30pm is a subtitled screening of the Tom Hanks classic Cast Away (12A), which sees Hanks’s protagonis­t stranded on a desert island with only a football to keep him company.

On Friday at 2.30pm is a screening of the kids’ classic Frozen (PG), in which Princess Anna attempts to undo the snowstorm brought on by her sister, Elsa.

This event will begin at 2pm with a meet and greet with the Frozen characters – so make sure to come early!

In the evening at 7.30pm is Brazil (15), Terry Gilliam’s dystopian dark comedy which follows a hapless bureaucrat as he strives to correct an error and in doing so, becomes an enemy of the state.

A weekend of classics begins on Saturday, February 22 with musical West Side Story (PG) at 2.30pm.

On Sunday, February 23 is Billy Wilder’s iconic film noir

Sunset Boulevard (PG) at 2.30pm, and at 7.30 is the Italian movie Life Is Beautiful (PG), in which a Jewish librarian uses his humour and imaginatio­n to protect his son from the Holocaust happening all around them.

On Monday, February 24 at 7.30pm the Bijou holds their fortnightl­y quiz, so make sure to head down for a chance to win some prize money.

On Tuesday, February 25 is Bette Davis classic Now Voyager (U) at 2.30pm, in which a frumpy spinster blossoms under therapy and becomes an elegant, independen­t woman.

On Saturday, February 29 at 2.30pm is the Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau comedy The Odd Couple (PG), and at 7.30pm is Baz Lurhman’s cult classic Moulin Rouge! (12A).

The Bijou rounds off the week with two very different films on Sunday 1st March: first the James Dean classic Rebel Without A Cause (PG) at 2.30pm and later at 7.30pm, a special screening of Crowhurst (12A), in which an inexperien­ced sailor enters a round the world race which he fears he won’t be able to complete yet alone win.

This screening is followed by a Q+A with the film’s screenwrit­er, Andy Briggs.

The Bijou’s cafe/bar opens one hour prior to each film screening and all films can be booked at www.southport bijoucinem­a.co.uk or at the box office.

Adult tickets are £5, under18s are £3, and discounts are available with £5 membership cards for a year.
