Someone’s 0 had to go but it wasn’t Spartan’s
SOUTHPORT’S Jake ‘The Spartan’ Barton took to the ring for his fifth professional boxing contest last weekend.
The stakes were high as Barton faced Nottingham’s Olly Newham, also undefeated and with more experience boasting a solid record of 7-0, so somebody’s 0 had to go!
Due to the restrictions in place for COVID-19 the bout took place behind closed doors, with unfortunately no fans in attendance.
It was however broadcast live on pay per view and received record breaking viewing figures for the FightStream TV platform.
Hosted at Hangar 34 in Liverpool’s baltic triangle, the set-up was fantastic and looked great on the cameras.
Barton v Newham was the chief support bout of the evening and was tipped by many as a Fight of the Night candidate.
Barton certainly did not disappoint, in a very close opening round in which Newham established a solid jab, The Spartan landed a right hand just before the bell which certainly got the Nottingham-based fighter’s attention.
At the start of the second round it was clear Barton was keen to pick up the pace as the pair traded blows until Barton was able to land a single left hook which completely shut out the lights of Newham, knocking him unconscious with the referee waving the fight off, the count wasn’t necessary.
Thankfully after some time and the help of the medical staff in attendance Newham was brought to his feet and later left the venue healthy.
The victory saw Barton extend his unbeaten professional record to 5-0 and with many eyes of the boxing world watching, the future is bright for the 26 year old.
The KO was certainly a testament to all of the hard work during training camp and the improvements Barton has made with his coach Rob Butler down at the Rydal Gym in Liverpool.
For anyone wanting to catch the video of the knockout, it can be seen on Barton’s social media channels, @ jakebarton94 on Instagram and Jake The Spartan Barton on Facebook. You’ll also be able to keep up with future fight announcements and training updates from there too.
The event was promoted by Clifton Mitchell of Mitchell Sports Promotions and John Dickenson, president of Fight Stream TV, keep a look out for their future events. After such a stunning KO I’m sure they’ll be keen to have Barton back.
