Charity status for Port’s Community Foundation

-

SOUTHPORT Football Club have announced they have secured charitable status from the Charity Commission to launch Southport Football Club Community Foundation.

Charitable status was secured in March 2020 with the objective of promoting community participation in healthy recreation to benefit people’s physical and mental wellbeing.

The first year for any organisation is always a challenging one, but it seems that this may be the case this year more than any, with Covid-19 and national lockdown’s within weeks of Southport FC Community Foundation’s inception.

The foundation has hit the ground running though by starting a walking football programme for older adults that has been running since August and has around 20 regular attendees.

These sessions take place each Wednesday from 12001300 at Dunes. The cost is £2 per participant.

Little Kickers, a football skills session for those aged between three and six takes place each Saturday from 10-11am at Meols Cop High School, and the Foundation has also launched the Wildcats programme also at Meols Cop High School from 11.30am– 12.30pm which is aimed at girls aged 6-12.

The trustees are keen to build on this early success by engaging with as many local people as possible and the foundation has applied for funding to develop a range of innovative initiatives that will develop the physical and mental well-being of the local community.

Trustee Noel Warham said: “I was surprised and honoured to be asked to be one of the trustees for the community foundation.

“Having lived in Southport for pretty much my whole life, the town, the community and the club mean a huge amount to me and the opportunity to be involved in an organisation which could have a transformative effect in the local community was too good to turn down.

“The football club has a huge power – and a responsibility – to help shape local development and renewal which is even greater in the current difficult times we live in – and I can’t wait to see the large variety of ways in which the Foundation can make a positive difference in so many people’s lives.”
