Angel watches over hospital

-

ASTUNNING mural of a nurse with angel wings has now taken pride of place at Southport and Formby District General Hospital.

The 4ft by 3ft canvas, called Our Angel, was painted by local artist Robert Newbiggin and was commissioned by Mark Horton, the owner of Southport firm Liberty Contracts.

The artist has already made a name for himself in Southport this year, creating the world’s largest mural of Captain Sir Tom Moore.

The three-storey artwork stands proudly on one side of the Anthony James Estate Agent building on Hoghton Street, flanked by another giant mural, which pays tribute to the NHS heroes who have saved so many lives during this Covid-19 pandemic.

Now he has completed a new commission for Liberty Contracts owner Mark Horton, who was determined to pay his own tribute to everyone who works in our NHS health service at Southport and Ormskirk NHS Hospital Trust.

His firm specialised in joinery and bespoke manufacture and has been a proud member of the North West consortium of NHS Trusts for over 15 years.

During the Covid pandemic, Mr Horton and his colleagues have been installing Covid protection screens in the hospital.

He said: “I have been a patron of Robert’s work for a few years now. He is a real talent.

“We at Libertys have been maintaining Southport and Ormskirk hospitals for over 20 years.

“We have been on the front line refurbishing A&E, ITU, paediatrics departments.

“We have seen close up the fantastic work the A&E team have done from the nurses, doctors, ambulance workers, cleaners, porters and others so we commissioned this painting for the staff to show how highly we think of their efforts.”

The artwork has been very well received by staff at Southport and Ormskirk NHS Hospital Trust.

Robert Newbiggin was honoured to be able to complete the commission.

He said: “This piece is a commission by my friend Mark Horton of Liberty Contracts as they have been at Southport Hospital for a few months installing Covid protection screens and doing other work in there.

“He wanted to give them a little appreciation for all the hard work the nurses and other staff at the hospital are providing.

“To all the nurses and staff, I would like to thank you for all your hard work”.
