AGRANDMOTHER says she will “never take anything for granted” after her husband fell and hit his head.
Brenda Porter, from Southport, was out with her husband Ken on July 23.
The pair – who have been married for 60 years – were on Station Road in Ainsdale Village when Ken tripped and fell, banging his head and causing his nose to break.
Former town councillor Brenda told the Visiter: “It was just an accident, but we were both in terrible shock.
“He had a pounding headache and the ambulance took a while.
“I called some family members and they came immediately, but we were also helped by so many people we didn’t know.
“People got covers and blankets for him. An off-duty doctor stopped his car and stayed with him.
“Another man held everything in place so he could be bandaged. One chap stopped and asked if there was anything he could do, and we said ‘No thanks, we are just keeping him warm’, so he took his jacket off and left it over him.”
Ken was taken to hospital by ambulance, and came home the next morning.
Brenda says he is doing much better now.
She continued: “People were just so kind. I don’t know if anybody realises how much it means to be offered help in a situation like that.
“People were telling jokes, keeping his spirits up and his mind entertained.
“I want to say an enormous thank-you to everybody who helped him after that nasty shock.
“We have always known Ainsdale was a nice community, but people went above and beyond that night.”
