Trinity fall behind pace in race for top two

- BY JONNY FIRTH

TRINITY went into the weekend on the back of a tremendous run chase at league leaders, Spring View, last week and knew they’d have to perform equally as well to get past Maghull on Saturday. Going into the game Maghull sat second in the table, with Trinity third.

Craig Prince won the toss and had no hesitation in electing to bat first at The Rookery. Vidal Crandon and Bobby Eyes opened up but it wasn’t long before Eyes departed for 11, caught in the slips.

Crandon looked in good touch but when he was bowled, looking to attack, he joined Eyes and Black in the shed with Trinity 55-3.

The middle order of Van Der Walt, Hine and Campbell all made single figure score and when Eddie James joined Craig Prince at the crease, Trinity were in trouble at 68-6.

James and Prince provided the only significant partnership, adding 54 for the 7th wicket until the skipper was caught at mid-on for 23. Eddie James was the stand out batsman for STCC with an excellent 42* from 44 balls, including 6 x 4s. Sean Cragg threatened to wagg the tail until he was adjudged LBW for 14. Trinity all out for a below par 161 from 43 overs.

The Maghull openers, Liam Crilly and Jamie Breakwell, made the highest partnership of the game, taking Maghull to 70 before Mark Prince had Crilly caught by Bobby Eyes at point.

A mixture of poor bowling and good batting saw the visitors in very little trouble throughout the run chase and despite the efforts of Liam Simms, who claimed 3-38 from 14 overs, Maghull cruised to victory in the 37th over.

A disappointing performance which leave The Rookery men sitting fourth, with a difficult task now in order to finish in the top two.

There is no fixture at the weekend for Southport Trinity, however they take on Hightown St Mary’s at The Rookery on Saturday 14th August.

Elsewhere in Division 2, Suleman Khan was the star for leaders Spring View, taking 7/41 to dismiss hosts Hightown St

Mary’s for 130 and pave the way for a three-wicket win.

Wavertree’s Laurie Kitchen helped his side recover from 105/7 to post 169 against Norley Hall; he then took the last three wickets to wrap up a 43-run win.

Sutton managed to defend just 74 against Prestatyn, and fairly comfortably - first they recovered from 48/8, then dismissed their visitors for 54, with Alex Oldfield taking 7/16. Liverpool Competition Division 2:
