Life at The Little Theatre, Southport Next stop, 1940s New York

-

WE have returned our spider plant and popped Demis Roussos back in his sleeve and we are now venturing to 1940s New York. Death of a Salesman is described as a tragedy of the common man in two-acts; a change of pace from the biting comedy of Abigail’s Party but there are parallels. We have another dominant character, disappointed by life’s lot as well as being contradictory and delusional. The hopes, fears and flaws of the people we meet when we go to the theatre allow us to safely explore our own.

Willy Loman is a 63-year-old salesman. He has been at the game for 45 years but life has not been without its challenges. His wife Linda is supportive and loyal, but business is bad and their once peaceful home is surrounded by new builds and noise.

Their two sons have not followed their father, but then Willy did not follow his own father or his brother who were both explorers. Willy wrestles with concern he has not been a good father, finding fault in their choices, but is also hopeful for the future.

This classic and enduring piece is being directed by experienced actor/director John Sharp. He is supported by a fellow double threat, Robin Hirsch. The cast includes seasoned performers Andrew Sloman and Helen Pickavance as Willy and Linda Loman. Their sons are portrayed by Graeme Hunt and Thomas Ashcroft.

We will reveal more cast, and glimpses behind the scenes next week, but you can book now for the play which will be performed from February 18-26.

Don’t forget the ‘Join Us and Join In’ event on Friday, February 4 at 7.30pm. It offers an excellent opportunity to meet representatives of the different departments and have a tour of the theatre.
