AMAJOR road was shut by police after a group of men on motorbikes targeted a jewellers.

Lord Street in Southport was closed after Merseyside police rushed to the scene of a burglary on Monday night. Officers arrived at the scene at around 9pm after they received reports of a breakin at Rebecca’s Jewellers.

A cordon was quickly set up by officers as a large part of the road and pavement was blocked off from the public. A second cordon was also set up around a bus stop on Lord Street with what appeared to be bags at the centre of it.

It has now been confirmed that a group of men on motorbikes targeted the jewellers and stole a large quantity of jewellery. A 43-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on suspicion of burglary at the scene as he attempted to flee the scene via London Street.

Lord Street was closed between the junction with Nevill Street and Eastbank Street while police conducted forensic examinations and reviewed CCTV footage.

Detective Chief Inspector Gayle Rooney said: “Thanks to a member of the public who called us as soon as this incident took place our officers were able to make a prompt arrest. The investigation is in its early stages and we will be reviewing all CCTV locally and speaking to business owners and anyone with information. If you were in the area and saw or heard anything, please let us know.

“Whilst we are establishing exactly what was stolen, I would ask if any individuals or businesses have been or are offered jewellery in Merseyside or surrounding areas in the coming days and have any suspicions as to their origin, please get in contact. This would be a distressing and inconvenient experience for any business and we will act on all information to find those responsible and bring them to justice.”

Rebecca’s Jewellers shared a statement confirming the shop was “targeted by thieves”. They also thanked people for their kind messages after police were called to the shop last night.

The jewellers posted on Facebook: “We are saddened to share that yesterday evening (21/03/22) we were targeted by thieves. As of yet we do not know the full extent of the damage they have caused, the police are currently carrying out their investigations.

“During this time there will be a disturbance to our usual opening hours, however we are still contactable for anything urgent. Thank you for all of the kind messages of support they are very much appreciated.”
