Colts cruise into final of Lancashire Trophy

-

WITH no senior matches on the weekend due to the 6 Nations matches, the focus centred on the Junior section – and how they shone in the spotlight.

Southport RFC Senior Colts travelled to Bolton RUFC for the semi-final of the Lancashire Trophy on

Sunday afternoon. The conditions were perfect for a great day of rugby and there was definitely an air of expectation from the travelling contingent.

Southport were quick out of the traps, when some slick handling led to an unconverted try from the winger Ben Gillman.

However, Southport’s early dominance was thwarted slightly due to a yellow card, which was then followed by a red card incident. The event saw a player from either side exiting for an ‘early bath’.

Southport composed themselves and the tries starting to roll in, with Danyon Huggins crashing over from close range, which was converted by

Harrison Carney. This was quickly followed by a well deserved try from Ollie Ball after some nimble footwork from Zak DayJohnson. Carney added the two points. The 1st half was rounded off by a superb individual effort from Ollie Roper, which was converted by Carney to bring the score line to 0-26.

The second half again started well for the visitors when Keenan Parr saw an opportunity and took a quick penalty to cross the line. Carney added the two points.

Unfortunately, complacency set in and Southport dropped their guard for a short period when Bolton crossed the line twice with one being converted to bring the score to 12-33. However, Southport composed themselves again and finished the match off in style with Parr bagging his second of the day in typical sniping fashion.

The conversion was added by the multi-talented George Brain, to bring a final score line of 12-40.

The ColtsTrophy Final is on Sunday 24th April 2022.

Southport are welcoming Patrons to the Club for a lunch this Saturday afternoon where Southport 3rd will take on Colne & Nelson 2nd team.
