Flip-flop man steals letter ‘S’ from club’s sign

-

A BAR manager has been left puzzled after a man wearing flip-flops stole part of the building’s sign.

Steve Dobbin, general manager of Fleetwood Hesketh Sports and Social Club in Southport, was closing up for the night when he noticed something was wrong.

Approaching the sign which adorns the hallway wall of the club he realised the S from Hesketh was missing.

Puzzled, Steve checked the club’s CCTV where he discovered the cameras had filmed a man, wearing flip flops and sweat pants, approach the sign and take the letter.

Steve said: “This guy had come in with two members and they have gone and had a game of pool then politely put their glasses on the bar as they were leaving.

“As they were heading to the bathroom the guy walked up to the sign took the S off the wall and followed his mates into the bathroom. Then they all left.”

According to the two members, they did not know the man. They had met him on a night out in Southport and taken him back to the social club for a quick drink.

Steve, 60, said: “As a members club we don’t tend to have stuff like this happen. I could not not believe it. It’s a bit strange isn’t it unless his name starts with the letter S.”

Steve, who has run the social club for the last 31 years, said the man had been in touch and was planning to return the sign but they had heard nothing from him since.

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: “We were contacted following reports a letter had been taken off a sign inside the Fleetwood Hesketh Social club in Southport.”
