Former headteacher Maurice dies aged 94
FORMER headmaster of Holy Trinity Primary School, Maurice Clayton, has sadly passed away at the age of 94.
Mr Clayton was headmaster at the school from 1972 until he retired in 1989.
Having previously been a headmaster at schools in Yorkshire and Kent, at the time of his retirement he was the longest serving head in Sefton at over 30 years.
Holy Trinity is the only town centre school in Southport and many of the pupils that were taught at the school were the children of the local business owners.
Hundreds of children will have been under Mr Clayton’s care over the 17 years of his career at the school.
Mr Clayton is survived by his two children, Philip and Janet, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
His son Philip said: “My father was also a very active member of the church that the school is joined to and was friends with many of the parishioners. For the past 15 years he has lived in Nantwich with my late mother who passed away in 2020.
“In 2019 my father was one of the 150 residents who lost their homes at the
Beechmere Residential Complex for the Elderly in Crewe, when it was completely destroyed by fire.
“All the residents got out alive but a lifetime’s possessions, photos, newspaper cuttings and keep sakes were gone.”
One of Holy Trinity’s former pupils was Kenneth Baker (Baron Baker of Dorking) who was evacuated to Southport during the Second World War and attended the school.
He visited the school in 1986 and gave them a cup, which is awarded to a pupil each year for English.
