New centre manager Justine looks forward as she introduces herself

-

WITH snow on the ground, but the sun lighting up the wintery sky, it is my pleasure to be writing this article and to have this opportunity to introduce myself Justine Shenton, the new Macmillan Centre Manager.

I have had many years’ experience of working in the voluntary and community sector in Sefton and am delighted to take up this new role and join our fantastic team.

Here at the Southport and Formby Macmillan Centre, we are looking forward to a year full of events and activities to support people living with cancer in our local area.

We are planning a Health and Wellbeing event in April at Southport College. This is an information and support day for people living with cancer and their families. We are also offering our HOPE (help overcome problems effectively) course, to help people recover and rediscover their strengths following a diagnosis.

We have several activity groups ongoing, including walking, yoga, craft, singing and an evening social group. We hope to add to our offer with more opportunities for physical activity as we get into the spring and summer. The benefits of physical activity for people living with cancer are now widely accepted.

Our groups cater for all levels and abilities, so don’t be afraid to give it a try, whether that is a gentle stroll along Lord Street or a specific exercise class.

Our centre, at 29 Wright Street in Southport, is open for drop in from 10am to 4pm every day and we would be very happy to see you. We have plenty of information leaflets and booklets in the centre for you to take away on a full range of cancer related subjects. We can also order specific booklets if we don’t have them in stock.

Did you know we have a team of dedicated Cancer Specialist Social Prescribers, who can offer you the support and information that you need for as long as it is needed? You can ask your GP to make a referral to us or simply give us a call or drop in. The service is open to anyone with a Southport and Formby area GP.

On February 1, we are starting a new coffee and a chat afternoon at 2pm. There is no need to book a place, just come along and enjoy some friendly company in our lovely centre.

We couldn’t offer our groups activities without the help of our team of volunteers. Whether supporting the groups, leading walks, or helping at events, our volunteers are a valued and essential part of our service. If you feel you may want to explore volunteering with us, we would love to hear from you. We have several roles available, and we are very flexible as to the level of commitment needed. Full training and ongoing support are provided by the team.

We are currently planning a spring fayre, so do come and support us at this fun event. For the latest information on our events and activities, have a look at our website here or follow us on Facebook - southportmacmillancentre or Twitter - @SouthportMacC. You can contact by phone by ringing 01704 533024. No question or concern is too big or too small.
