Raise glass to support

-

PUBS need our support more than ever, and we will only keep them as long as we keep supporting these historic, brilliant local businesses.

The good news is that we have some fantastic traditional local pubs in Southport. We have multiple award-winners, with venues recognised as some of the very best in the region for the quality of their real ales, their lagers, their venues, their heritage, their food, their facilities, and most of all theory atmosphere and their real sense of community, atmosphere and belonging.

But these are changing times. In recent years we have lost some of the most long-standing pubs in the Southport area.

The Phoenix closed its doors in January. The Victoria’s windows are still shuttered after closing last year. The Falstaff is currently being converted into flats. The George is about to become a Co-Op food store.

None of us want to see any more of Southport’s famous pubs go by the wayside. We should cherish them at every opportunity.

Here are some of the great Southport pubs to tick off – please let us know which ones are your favourites! The Guest House 16 Union Street, PR9 0QE 01704 537660

LOCATED close to the station and Lord Street, this listed building has an impressive frontage and an interior with three separate wood-panelled drinking areas.

There are 11 handpumps, one of which serves a beer from a local microbrewery. A wide range of malt whiskies is also stocked.

This quiet, traditional pub attracts a mixed clientele. It hosts a quiz night on Thursday and an acoustic folk club on the first and third Mondays of the month. There is seating outside at the front and a courtyard to the rear.

Local CAMRA Pub of the Year 2022.
