‘Insufficient evidence’ carer

Inquest hears no-one will know why woman jumped from club fire escape

THE reason why a woman jumped to her death while on a night out with work colleagues will never be known, an inquest has heard.

Kathryn Davenport, better known as Katie, had shared videos of herself dancing as she enjoyed a night out in Southport town centre last September.

Within 20 minutes though, she had been involved in an “altercation” and was moved to fire escape.

Tragically, she then suffered fatal injuries after climbing the balcony and jumping 15ft to the floor below.

An inquest this week heard there was insufficient evidence to suggest she wanted to end her life and her motive for jumping remains unclear.

The inquest, at Bootle Town Hall, heard that care worker Katie was enjoying herself in Hey Amigos in the early hours of Sunday, September 4.

When an altercation broke out, a door supervisor moved Katie and her friend to the fire escape in an attempt to calm things down.

As he tried to ensured no others went out onto the fire escape, he turned round to find Katie jumping off the fire escape and landing on the concrete help for depression and anxiety.

Her family also told of how they received a video of Katie dancing, with her being “confident, outgoing and loving life”.

The 23-year-old had also not long passed her driving test, bought a car, started a second job and was saving up to buy a house with her boyfriend Niall.

The statement, written by her sister Lianne, said: “I, along with other family members, received a Snapchat from Katie 20 minutes before the accident, she was happy, dancing and laughing on the dance floor of Hey Amigos showing no signs of distress or upset.”

At the inquest, senior coroner Julie Goulding ruled a narrative verdict and said: “Kathryn had been on a night out on the 4th of September in a local nightclub.

“She seemed happy and had a few drinks.

“Katie was involved in an altercation and was asked to leave the venue.”

She continued: “Katie appeared to jump off the balcony which was 15 feet above the ground where she sustained traumatic injuries.”

Concluding, Ms Goulding said: “There is insufficient evidence she wanted to take her own life.”
