A right royal knees up is perfect reason to support your local pub

- BY NEVILLE GRUNDY

THE UK Government has announced that pub opening hours in England and Wales will be extended to 1am on May 5th, 6th and 7th to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

In response, CAMRA’s national chair Nik Antona said: “We can all raise a glass to the decision to extend pub and club licensing hours.

“It is the perfect time to get down to your local to enjoy a pint of hand-pulled cask ale or real cider with friends and family.

“With costs for businesses still rocketing, our pubs, clubs and breweries need as much support as they can get from the communities they serve so that they can continue to thrive.

“That’s why CAMRA is encouraging people to support their local pubs, social clubs, breweries and cider producers by making the most of these extended hours for the King’s coronation weekend.”

Southport and West Lancs chair Doug Macadam added: “This extension of pub opening hours means that pubgoers can join in the national celebrations while at the same time providing a small but valuable boost to our local pubs, which are still reeling from the double whammy of COVID and the cost of living crisis.”

Some licensing boards in Scotland have already extended opening hours for the coronation weekend in their own areas.

Wetherspoon’s Spring Beer Festival Wetherspoon’s is holding its customary spring real ale festival from Wednesday 22 March to Sunday 2 April inclusive.

The festival will include beers that are vegan (which are also suitable for vegetarians), as well as gluten-free offerings.

The range of beers will feature a range of different malt and hop varieties from around the world, and there will also be beers that include orange peel, chocolate and coriander in their ingredients.

The festival line-up includes Orkney Cliff Edge, Oakham Buckle Up!, Vale Brass Monkey, Brombeer Freddy Export (Belgium), Theakston Double Cross, Exmoor Upside Brown, Cambridge Flower Child IPA (USA), Saltaire Triple Choc, Cairngorm White Lady, Sudwerk Reeds Ale (Switzerland).
