Running teen trebles his charity fundraising target

-

A TEENAGER from Southport challenged himself to run two miles every day in February to raise funds for Rainbow Hub, the Mawdesley charity supporting children with physical and neurological disabilities.

Rowan Munro, 15, aimed to raise £500 but smashed his target long before February 28 – his current total is nearly £1,500.

He has logged his progress every day on social media and no matter what the weather , or how busy he has been with other commitments he has not missed a day.

Rowan said: “I decided to do this because I have two cousins who have struggled with disabilities all their lives and Rainbow Hub is a charity that helps young children with disabilities get the best quality of life they possibly can. They do not get any statutory funding towards their charitable services, relying solely on donations, so this is my way of helping them, it is a fantastic charity.”

Rowan attends Meols Cop High in Southport, which has helped him through his challenge with encouragement, and some of the teachers have even joined him on runs.

Rowan put a presentation together telling everyone about his challenge, and invited all students and teachers to join him on his penultimate run on February 27.

Rowan’s mum, Kirsty Munro, said: “We are so proud of him, he came to us with the idea that he wanted to help a charity and this was all done off his own back. He is clearly a very caring and compassionate young man and this shows from his commitment.

“He has two cousins one with complex medical needs and the other with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. I think seeing the help they need and receive from both the NHS and charities has spurred him on to help other children like them, raising awareness of lack of funding is all part of it.”

Kat Nelson, head of fundraising at Rainbow Hub, said: “We are amazed at all of Rowan’s efforts – not just the running which is an incredible commitment, but also with the dedication and determination with his fundraising too. His family has every right to be proud of him – he is doing something amazing, raising money and awareness and inspiring other people too.”

Anyone who would like to support Rowan can donate at his JustGiving page. More information about Rainbow Hub, can be found at their website, or follow them on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram @rainbowhubnw.
