Lewis’ trial after third cancer hit

SOUTHPORT schoolboy Lewis Wright is to undergo a transplant trial after doctors discovered that cancer had returned for a third time.

The Birkdale High School pupils’ first thoughts have been for others however, as he is determined to become a play therapist on an oncology ward.

Lewis was initially diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in July 2020, just four days before his 12th birthday.

The Birkdale High School pupil then endured a tough few months of gruelling chemotherapy treatment at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool before he was declared cancer free in March 2021.

Boyzone star Ronan Keating was so impressed by Lewis’ bravery – and an online video of him singing – that he phoned him to wish him well during his initial ordeal.

Lewis then overcame cancer a second time with more gruelling treatment before the latest devastating news.

His mum Kayleigh Sherran said: “Lewis had his bone marrow biopsy on Wednesday last week, we got the results on Friday and it’s not good news.

“His cancer is back for the thrd time and in the consultant’s words, his bone marrow is riddled.

“They gave us/Lewis two options, the first being to stop all treatment and use the time to make memories and enjoy Lewis.

“The second being he

can be put forward for a trial of a transplant using cord blood from a baby’s umbilical cord.

“This option is not a cure but it could give him a better chance.

“Lewis has chosen the trial. We had a meeting at Manchester to have his bloods checked again and have a meeting about what happens next.

“It’s now looking like Lewis will be going to Alder Hey to start chemo then back to Manchester to begin the transplant process.

“As you can imagine as a family we are all devastated, we have been told to make memories but this is so hard when he will be an inpatient again for so long.

“Lewis is remaining positive and looking to the future, he has decided he wants to become a play therapist on an oncology ward.
