Flexible solution for clubs in delayed start

- BY PAUL EDWARDS

CLUBS in the Love Lane Liverpool Competition have agreed to begin their league season a week on Saturday with the proviso that they can rearrange the matches scheduled for that date should their grounds remain unfit.

This flexible solution to the problems caused by the recent heavy rain was overwhelmingly approved at the Competition’s special general meeting at Bootle CC last Tuesday and it means that Southport

and Birkdale will open their season at home to Birkenhead Park.

Should rain prevent that game starting, it will have to be rearranged for a date on or before July 13th.

However, once the match begins, it will be treated like a normal league fixture and both sides will receive five points should rain prevent it reaching a conclusion.

The SGM also agreed that all matches scheduled for this Saturday should be played on May 18th, the day originally scheduled for the first round of the Ray Digman Cup, so S&B will visit Rainford on that Saturday and their early-season league fixture-list is as follows:

April 27 – Birkenhead Park (H), May 4 – Formby (H), May 11 – Rainhill (A), May 18 – Rainford (A), May 25 – Ormskirk (A), June 1 – Newton-le-Willows (H), June 8 – Wallasey (A)

Despite the rearrangement, however, it is still uncertain whether S&B’s overseas player, Kevin

D’Almeida, will be available to play in the opening game against Birkenhead Park.

D’Almeida was due to visit the High Commission to obtain his visa on Tuesday but it is thought it will take between seven and nine days to process the necessary paperwork, meaning that even if things go smoothly, the Mumbai batsman might only arrive in England with a day or so to spare.

But planning is going well for Trafalgar Road’s biggest game of the season on June 30-July 3, when Nottinghamshire will visit Trafalgar Road to take on Lancashire in a four-day Vitality County Championship match.

A number of corporate hospitality bookings have already been taken and anyone wishing to enjoy the club’s highly regarded catering facilities and watch the game from the specifically designated marquee should email info@totallydvine.co.uk or ring 01704-868301 for full details on what might be available for groups of ten, smaller family and individuals.

As last season, tables of ten will be available, priced at £999 inclusive of VAT for S&B members and £999 plus VAT for nonmembers.

The day-long attractions on offer include breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea with table service and a hospitality bar.

Bottles of wine will be provided for each table and guests will also have the issue of an exclusive outdoor seating area from where they can watch the groups friends, of or cricket. The bar in the corporate hospitality marquee will remain open until 9pm.
