I have been told that it isn’t advisable to use torches on the walk out to the marsh because it disturbs birds at roost, and other shooters. Is this true? How do you manage without one?

Tom says:

It is a bit of an unwritten rule not to use torches when walking out under darkness because it does cause disturbance. However, all marshes – no matter how well you think you know them – can throw up surprises, and health and safety considerations might have to be taken into account. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

I always wear a head torch in case it’s needed, but when it’s turned on I do find it hard to judge the depth of field when walking. Instead, I find it better to let my eyes adjust to the darkness and rely on a wading stick to help me navigate my route into the darkness.

Safety is always the first consideration, so don’t feel you can’t use one, however, use common sense to ensure it won’t spoil the sport for you or fellow wildfowlers.

A good tip is to use a torch with a red light or filter because these typically cause less disturbance and allow your eyes to adjust quicker to the surroundings once you switch it off.
