What’s it all about Alfie?

-

Those of you have read about Alfie since he arrived at Greenlee will know that the big lad has a tendency to cause mischief and we are both in trouble again. The boss spends a great deal of time and effort in the garden to great success. The quince are almost ready to harvest and Alfie seems to have taken a liking to them. His routine now is to leap out of the kennel and dash around the back then sneak under the quince tree and pluck the fruit off, returning to the kennel and chomp it up, complete with furiously wagging tail and mischievous smug look in his eye. At the age of 10, has he not realised by now that the garden is sacrosanct and we are both heading for armageddon? Apparently not.

Buck 3

This is a classic large buck with a good, balanced heavy head so why was he entered on list one?

He had been seen over a period of three years and had been left to develop. When he was shot he was in poor condition and still partially in velvet in May, which for a good, mature buck I would not be expect to see on that ground. Older bucks always come out of velvet before younger males.

My decision was that he had reached his best and was unlikely to improve. This was confirmed on inspection before the gralloch; his teeth proved to be badly worn down and a large parasite burden of lung worm and liver fluke were found, hence his poor condition.it was his time.

The sustainable management of deer involves more that most people think and it should never be the case of shooting just what appears on an ad hoc basis. Thought, observation and your lists one and two should benefit both you and, more importantly, the native roe deer. Hold your zero and stick to your plan.
