Bad diet

Sporting Gun - - Letters -

A friend once told me that rabbits eat their own faeces. Is this true? If so, why do they do this?

Ed says: I used to keep rabbits as pets and can confirm that it is true. I believe they eat around a third of the droppings, to take in nutrients that they didn’t absorb the first time. They do the same in the wild, but with access to much more natural food they eat fewer droppings — unless food is scarce.
