Check your gun fit

-

After a day’s shooting, I get a sore jaw bone which turns into a lump. Do I need a gun fit?

Tony says: The first thing to look at is the gun mount. It sounds as if you are not mounting your gun to your cheek — or zygomatic arch — but rather mounting the gun to your shoulder and the gun moves up to your jaw as you swing up on to a driven bird. Once you get a good mount, to your cheek, the sore jaw will go. You will need to practise to get the muscle memory of mounting to your cheek and reassess your sight picture on driven targets, as shooting with your head off the stock will place your shot pattern a lot further forward on a driven target than you think. With your head firmly on the stock you will be able to be more consistent and feel a lot less pain in the jaw.
