Can I shoot pistols?

-

I want to join a shooting club to try some live ammunition stationary target rifle shooting, but I would also like to shoot with reproduction live ammunition Wild West guns, such as the Colt 1873 Single Action Army Peacemaker revolver. Is it possible to do this in the UK given current firearms legislation?

Robert says: When the 1997 pistol ban came in, the only place where pistol shooting could still be conducted was Bisley in Surrey. You had to have a special firearms certificate — a Section 7(3) — and your pistols and ammunition had to be stored at the club and were not allowed to be removed. Also, the pistols you possessed had to be of historic or technical merit, which always boiled down to knowing more about your subject than the issuing authorities. Subsequently, more clubs have been granted Section 7(3) status, but the storage and use conditions remain, making it a difficult sport to get into. Many clubs have attached shops and can help with this, but “have a go” days and club guns are a thing of the past.
