Sporting Gun

A Left-to-right Battue

- DECEMBER 2018

From all stands this clay can be shot with the Interception or Maintained Lead technique. However, the perception of lead required alters dramatically from Stand One to Five and the shooter needs to be able to read this and compensate for it. Each individual clay isn’t too difficult but collectively, when shot in sequence under pressure, they can be tricky and teach a shooter to think on their feet.

With an ordinary sporting layout it is harder to see a pattern developing in a shooter’s progress as they move from stand to stand. But with Compak it is easier to observe and to see any errors as they develop across the five stands. It is important to note that while the angle of a clay may change from stand to stand, the

lead may remain the same, although the perception of lead will alter”.

“Like a snooker player you have to think one shot ahead, where will you pick up the clay where will you shoot it and crucially, where will that leave you for the second clay. Sometimes it is beneficial to shoot a clay sooner rather than later, or vice versa. It may not be the best place to smash it, but if it leaves you ready for the next clay with minimal gun movement then it must be done.

You are preparing for your second shot as much as for the first. It gets you thinking about lots of things related to hold points and technique. It can be a way of upping your game and breaking through the plateau”.

So, in essence, Compak is perhaps the equivalent of high interval or cross training techniques in the world of fitness. Give it a go. It’s fun and may take you to another stage in your development as a competitive or recreational shooter.
