Sword history

Sporting Gun - - Letters - DECEMBER 2018

Can you advise me on the era this sword came from and the particular style of hilt?

It is also found with four different devices incorporated into the hilt design. Usually this is the crown and initials of the reigning monarch and can be found with GRIV, WRIV and VR, for King George IV, William IV and Queen Victoria respectively. Sometimes, as in the case of yours, it is found with a General’s crossed sword and baton device combined with the monarch’s crown — Victoria in this case. These are rarer, but unfortunately, as with all antiques, condition is everything and in the worn condition yours is in I would expect an auction estimate of £70-£120.
