Shooting over crops

-

The farmer on my permission is going to drill wheat and barley and has invited us to keep an eye on the woodies. Do you have any tips on shooting over these crops?

Peter says: The only times pigeons feed on these crops is when they are drilled, when they have formed ears prior to harvest and also after harvest, when there is likely to be spilled grain on the floor. Be aware that there are different varieties of seed — one that is planted in the autumn and the other in the spring — as this will affect when the crops ripen. Only reconnaissance will tell you if enough seed has been left on top at drilling time to warrant an outing, but pigeons have no particular preference for one or the other.
