Sporting Gun

Bill of rights

-

are some who are cavalier and believe they are John Wayne. My message to all shooters is ‘think safety, act safely and, if necessary, report stupidity’. It could save your life or mine.

I have a suggestion with regard to the phasing out of lead shot. Rather than all those lovely old guns out there becoming showpieces or even scrapped, couldn’t we have ‘grandad’s rights’ on our licence, as we have with our driving licence? In other words, when you produce your licence for purchase of cartridges it would quite clearly show the guns you own and any person working in the industry would know they are not suitable for steel. If the gun were sold it would lose these rights but not if it was passed on as a family heirloom, though proof would be required for this. Such a system would ensure that as old, unwanted guns were traded in for new steel-compatible ones we would have natural wastage.
