Case for peatland burning
BASC has published a brief on burning as part of the ongoing management of peatland. The document, entitled Don’t ban the burn, is intended to counter what it calls the “misinformed lobby” who wish to stop the practice. Gareth Dockerty, BASC’s uplands officer, said: “BASC’s position is clear. Burning vegetation in the uplands is an essential tool in wildlife management and mitigation. Burning can increase biodiversity. Its use is site dependent and it is wrong to say that you should always burn or never burn.”
