Insulin resistance

Some animals are resistant to insulin and are identified when doses of 2.2 units per kg have no appreciable effect on blood glucose. There are a number of potential causes:

• Antagonistic hormones (steroids, sex hormones)

• Obesity

• Infections (especially cystitis)
