Training a gundog to jump
I have a labrador that I want to do some working tests with and perhaps trial. Do I need to teach him to jump?
Fran says: Having a gundog that will jump on command is very useful, and if you plan to trial your dog or even enter it into working tests you will need to teach him to jump safely. Start by using a low solid-top jump or fence, gradually build up the dog’s confidence and with time a labrador should be able to jump a five-bar gate with ease.
The dog needs to have matured physically before you start any jump training as the strain on young bones and ligaments can cause long-term irreparable damage. Do not use any wire-topped fences until your dog is really confident and jumping well.
